Busting Myths – When Will I Become A ProBlogger?

In: Personal Ramblings

12 Jun 2010

I have been asked this question repeatedly, by people I have met as to when I would become a pro-blogger. Let me tell you that I have had to tell them the same thing again and again and this is why I am writing this post.

Pro-Blogging has been largely misrepresented with the fact that someone who has quit his job and does blogging is a pro-blogger. This is far from the truth, a pro-blogger is not necessarily someone whose only job is blogging, it could also be someone who writes for several blogs or someone who writes pretty often.

You are can be termed a pro-blogger the day you start making money from your blog, it could be 1 cent, it could be $10000, it is all the same. There is no difference in pro-blogging and making money from blogging.

Another misconception I busted was the fact where people asked me when I would become a pro-blogger, the reason they thought I was not one was because I had a job. However, I repeatedly told them and will tell you too, pro-blogging has nothing to do with you having a fulltime job or otherwise.

Pro-blogging is basically how you manage your time for your blog, how much time you can give to it and what you can derive from it. You can on any given day spend 8 hours at work and 8 hours on your blog and still be called a NON pro-blogger. The matter of fact is that people think only people who have left their jobs and are doing fulltime blogging are pro-bloggers or even someone who manages a successful blog.

To be very frank I do not want anyone to term me as a pro-blogger, nor do I want to achieve a term which is really become a fad, it is what is in your mind that matters. I make a healthy amount of money from both my job and my blog. I spend enough time on both my job and my blog, so does that mean I am a amateur blogger?

Stop using terms which were derived from some absurd place just because it seems appropriate. Use your brain to decide what you are, not some things which have been there all the time.

FYI, I will NEVER EVER term myself as a pro-blogger, because even if my fulltime job was blogging, I would still be doing a JOB that can become monotonous and boring. Blogging is not a paradise, it is just another job, so treat it like one.

I did not say that people who make money are pro-bloggers, if you read the whole post I said that people who spend time on their blogs enough to ensure it runs should be considered as fulltime bloggers.

If you take that example, I make xxx amount of money from the blog but I ensure that I also give enough time to it, however, I also make more money than many of the already so called pro-bloggers do without leaving my job, so would you still call me a amateur blogger?

Don’t quite agree with your classification of pro-bloggers. Anyone who earns from their blog isn’t a pro-blogger. But, I can see the sense in the defining probloggers as “anyone who earns enough to make a living from their blog”.

Of course, this makes the definition subjective and that’s how I feel it should be.

Looks like one of my replies got lost. So I am reposting.

You are a pro-blogger, because you earn enough to make a living from your blog.

If you want to continue earning well from your blog, you need to keep on working hard. However, working hard doesn’t guarantee success. Not everyone is equally talented.

In the same way, a newbie starting off may put in 6 hours a day, but he wont be a problogger. Sure, he can become one in some months be he can’t be called a problogger at the moment.

So, I go back to what I said before:

I can see the sense in the defining probloggers as “anyone who earns enough to make a living from their blog”.

I think that alone is sufficient to define a problogger. Other additional parameters mentioned by you are derivatives.

Pro-blogging is basically how you manage your time for your blog, how much time you can give to it and what you can derive from it.

I agree with you on the having a job thing. A pro-blogger is generally one who does it full time, but this shouldn’t be a necessity.
