Masand’s Verdict: Dostana, a barrel of laughs
Set in sunny Miami, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham play a pair of straight blokes who must pretend to be a gay couple so they’re allowed to rent rooms in a swanky condo occupied by single, young chick Priyanka Chopra. The trio strikes up a close friendship and all’s going well in their little world until both boys realise they’ve fallen for her. Wait, what’s more, she seems to be falling for her boss; that role played by Bobby Deol.
Dostana is injuriously entertaining – Rediff.com
We in India haven’t yet matured to sensitive, normalised portrayals of homosexuality, and this film continues to paint them as freaks of nature. John and Abhishek play a couple of decidedly homophobic straight men pretending to be gay, and every other gay character in the film is a complete, flamin’ caricature. It isn’t wrong to show a stereotypically effeminate man, of course, but to make absolutely no attempt to balance this is to damage an already-fragile mindset.
Dostana is no BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. It’s not a serious take on homosexuality either. On the contrary, it’s a madcap comedy where two straight men pretend to be gays. Although Dostana is a mainstream commercial film, it dares to push the envelope in its own way. It brings homosexuality out of the closet, gives it respect and dignity and doesn’t treat gays as ‘abnormal’.
Dostana Movie Review – WhoIsDeep.com
On the acting front, Abhishek and John did pretty good job.. I mean I liked their pair.. they gave everyone a good laugh.. Priyanka Chopra was HOT.. and yea.. she was good at acting too.. Bobby Deol was good too (haha Yea, he has learnt some acting lessons), Boman Irani was kind of wasted.. or may be, not utilized properly.. same for Kiron Kher.. rest of the star cast was pretty okay too..
Dostana Movie Review – NowRunning.com
This is a one of those mindless comedies which would have been more entertaining if it hadn’t been for the insensitive and stereotypical portrayal of gays. The producers have gone on record saying that it is just a comedy and that the subject has been handled sensitively but this is debatable.
